When hard-freeze temperatures are forecasted, protect your landscaping and irrigation system from costly damage.
A few simple steps can make a big difference:
1. Winterize Your Irrigation System
-
Drain exposed pipes, backflow preventers, and above-ground valves.
-
Turn off your irrigation controller until temperatures rise.
-
Shut off the main water supply to your irrigation system if possible.
-
Insulate backflow devices, valves, and any exposed piping with insulation or blankets if they cannot be drained.
2. Protect Your Plants
-
Cover sensitive plants with frost cloth, sheets, or burlap (avoid plastic directly on plants).
-
Water plants before the freeze—moist soil holds heat better than dry soil.
-
Add mulch around the base of plants to insulate roots.
3. After the Freeze
-
Wait until temperatures stabilize before uncovering plants.
-
Check for broken sprinkler heads, cracked pipes, or leaks before restarting your system.
